Forbidden Broadway Will Open Newest Edition, Dances with the Stars on June 28

The folks behind Forbidden Broadway have just announced that a new version is in the works – one that will use America’s current love affair with reality entertainment to fuel its fun-poking purpose. Entitled Dances with the Stars, the summer edition will open on June 28 at off-Broadway’s 47th St. Theater and will feature an updated sequence of clever concepts, loaded lyrics, and comic talent.

A sneak peek at subject matter reveals that Patti Lupone in Gypsy will be the target of some good-natured spoofing, as will South Pacific and Grease. (NBC’s nationally-televised search for Danny and Sandy will come under fire in the number Grease: You’re the One that I Hate.) Casting is not yet complete, but the actors who manage to nab one of its four demanding roles will win some great career-boosting exposure. Famous alums of the funny factory include Jason Alexander (Seinfeld) and Bryan Batt (AMC’s Mad Men.)

Creator Gerard Alessandrini, responsible for over 15 years of Forbidden Broadway-induced laughter, recently added a 2008 Drama Desk Award to the show’s growing list of accolades. His current edition, Rude Awakening, took the honor of Outstanding Revue for parodying the likes of Broadway newbies Spring Awakening and The Little Mermaid.

The debut edition of Forbidden Broadway appeared in 1982 at New York’s City’s Palsson’s Supper Club to critical acclaim. The show has since produced 10 cast recordings, several national tours, and a Forbidden Hollywood movie-spoofing spin-off.
