Whoopi Goldberg Tapped to Host 2008 Tony Awards
![]() The list of honors just got longer for Whoopi Goldberg. On Thursday morning, May 8, on The View, the multi-award winning actress, comedian, producer, author, and former Starship Enterprise bartender, announced that she’ll be hosting this year’s 62nd Annual Tony Awards, airing live June 15th on CBS. "I'm very excited to be hosting the Tony Awards. I love Broadway and I'm thrilled to be doing anything for the first time. I'm gonna have a blast,” Ms. Goldberg said in a succeeding statement. Whoopi Goldberg has appeared on Broadway in Whoopi Goldberg, as Pseudolus in the revival of A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum, and as the titular character in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The actress-comedian won 1985 Drama Desk and Theatre World awards for her one-woman show Whoopi Goldberg and won the 2006 Tony award as a producer for The Drowsy Chaperone. The 2008 Tony Awards is executive produced by Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss of White Cherry Entertainment. “How lucky are we to have such a legendary performer presiding over this year’s Tony Awards?” said Glenn Weiss. “Whoopi not only brings with her an immense amount of star-power, but also a charm and humor that is all her own,” said Ricky Kirshner.
