High School Musical 4 Information Revealed

Disney Channel Worldwide president Rich Ross announced on April 8th that pre-production and writing work has begun on a fourth High School Musical movie.

The third installment, starring all of the principal actors, begins filming at the end of April and is scheduled for a wide theater release on October 24th. Originally scheduled as a television debut, High School Musical 3 was elevated to a theater release after the record-breaking ratings of High School Musical 2, which garnered 17.3 million viewers during its debut broadcast on the Disney Channel. The sequel's debut is currently the most highest-rated basic-cable broadcast in U.S. history.

The Disney franchise has expanded rapidly since the debut of the initial High School Musical movie in 2006. Along with the movies, High School Musical has been adapted into a professional touring stage version, a Disney on Ice presentation, a series of short novels, a video game, and individual school productions.

Ross has stated that current plans are to keep High School Musical 4 a television movie debut. The Disney Channel president does not expect many of the starring cast members to return, due to increasing career demands and story concerns. (The subtitle of the third installment is "Senior Year", implying that most of the characters will be graduating from high school and perhaps from the franchise itself.)

No story, cast, or release details have been disclosed, although rumors are that a discarded storyline for "High School Musical 3" involving a Halloween-themed school haunting may be used in part.
