Opening A Catered Affair On Broadway, April 17
![]() Harvey Fierstein and John Doyle's adaptation of A Catered Affair opens April 17th at the Walter Kerr Theatre. The show began previews on March 25th. Directed by Doyle, with a book by Fierstein and score by John Bucchino, the show is a new musical adapted from the 1956 film of the same name. A Catered Affair marks Bucchino's first foray into Broadway. The story centers around a soon to be married couple in the Bronx in 1953. In A Catered Affair, this and other relationships strain to their limits when the couple must decide whether to spend their life savings on a family business or to launch their only daughter's marriage with a lavish catered affair. According to an interview with Fierstein and the cast and crew in Playbill.com, the show deviates from the film in several key areas, taking the opportunity to expand the backstories of many of the main characters. Including, most notably, the story behind the uncle's (Fierstein) sexuality. "I saw this opportunity to talk about confirmed bachelor uncles or maiden aunts," Fierstein told Playbill.com. "They were gay people that didn't know you could have relationships, that didn't know it was actually a possibility for them." The cast includes Faith Prince (as mother of the bride), Tony nominee Tom Wopat (as father of the bride), four-time Tony winner Harvey Fierstein (as uncle of the bride), Matt Cavenaugh (as the groom), and Leslie Kritzer (as the bride). Joining them are Philip Hoffman, Katie Klaus, Heather MacRae, Lori Wilner, and Kristine Zbornik. The design team comprises David Gallo (sets), Ann Hould-Ward (costumes), Brian MacDevitt (lights), Dan Moses Schreier (sound), Zachary Borovay (projections) and David Lawrence (hair).
