Godspell Finds Its Own Personal Jesus
![]() Gavin Creel has been cast as Jesus in the upcoming Broadway production of Godspell. Directed by Daniel Goldstein, with book, lyrics, and music by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak, Godspell is a musical based on "The Gospel According to St. Matthew" and uses, according to press notes, "improvisation and contemporary themes to illustrate the parables, bringing these lessons to life through the grand tradition of musical theatre." The same creative team, including choreographer Christopher Gattelli, were behind the 2006 Paper Mill Playhouse production of the musical. It was this production that inspired producer Adam Epstein to bring the show to Broadway, "When I saw Daniel Goldstein's production of Godspell, I was overpowered by its vibrancy and relevance. This Broadway production will take that experience to an even more glorious level. It is essential that the power of this production and how it moves people lives on at its highest potential." Lead Gavin Creel was nominated for a Tony in 2002 for Best Actor in a Musical for his role as Jimmy in Thoroughly Modern Millie. His past Broadway credits include Hair and La Cage Aux Folles. Godspell is currently shooting for an August 2008 opening at a Shubert theatre yet to be announced.
