Revival Of Gypsy, With LuPone, Begins March 3
![]() The Broadway revival of Gypsy, starring Patti LuPone, begins previews on March 3rd at the St. James Theatre. The show will officially open on March 27th. The revival comes off a summer 2007 limited engagement at City Center, where it was the inaugural production of the "Encores! Summer Stars" series. Directed by Arthur Laurents, the musical's librettist, the Broadway revival will feature much of the summer 2007 cast, including marquee name Patti LuPone in the familiar role of stage mother Rose. Loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee, the classic musical focuses on the story of her mother, Mama Rose, and her efforts to raise two daughters as successful and showbiz-bound actresses. The musical is celebrated as a perfect of example of what musicals should strive to be, citing its combination of complex characterization within the staging of its musical numbers. A Tony Award winner for her work in Evita, Patti LuPone also earned an Olivier Award for her performances in the West End productions of Les Miserables and The Cradle Will Rock. Also returning are Boyd Gaines and Laura Benanti, who played, respectively, Herbie and Louise in the City Center production. They are joined by Leigh Ann Larkin as Dainty June, Tony Yazbeck as Tulsa, Marilyn Caskey as Electra, Alison Fraser as Tessie, and Lenora Nemetz as Mazeppa with Bill Bateman as Mr. Goldstone, Jim Bracchitta as Uncle Jocko, Sami Gayle as Baby June, Bill Raymond as Pop, Brian Reddy as Weber, and Emma Rowley as Baby Louise. The ensemble will comprise Beckley Andrews, Nancy Renée Braun, Mindy Dougherty, Kyrian Friedenberg, Sarah Marie Hicks, Steve Konopelski, Matthew Lobenhofer, Nicole Mangi, Katie Micha, Matty Price, Andy Richardson, Jessica Rush, Alicia Sable, John Scacchetti, Geo Seery, Rider Quentin Stanton, and Pearce Wegener. Gypsy features a score by Jule Styne (music) and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) and a book by Arthur Laurents. The Broadway production will feature scenic design by James Youmans, costumes by Tony Award winner Martin Pakledinaz, lighting by Tony Award winner Howell Binkley, hair by Tony Award winner Paul Huntley and sound design by Dan Moses Schreier.
